Review of the CD-

The Queen’s Garden CD paints a picture of the play through music, Brenda Wong Aoki’s different personifications of characters (herself, Kali, Auntie Mary, Smoke, Judy, Sherry and her boyfriend, etc) and her imagery. She does not use all of the characters or lines from her original play but manages to recreate it using only her voice and music. She differentiates levels of her voice to personify these characters. For example, Auntie Mary, “Queen of the Westside,” had a voice that matched the description of her given also by Aoki. Steve and his girlfriend Sherry also had different voices to create the image of their characters. Aoki’s personifications and descriptions of these characters alone effectively allows the audience to picture what they look like and what kind of people they are.
